Zip™ Cooking Fuel

How much fuel do you have to use?

It varies depending on the stove used, climatic conditions and altitude – and of course on how much water needs boiling, or the quantity of food that needs to be cooked. The large humanitarian fuel block is designed to boil 5L of water on a Boilex ™ Tower stove in c30mins, the smaller wrapped fuel cube will burn for 18-20 minutes but is designed to boil 500ml of water with a Boilex ™ Pyramid stove in c10 minutes (both in ambient conditions). Details by stove can be found in each of the separate stove pages or brochures.

What type of metal pot / pan can you use?

Any pots and pans can be used.

Is the cooking fuel waterproof?

Yes. If soaked, the Zip ™ Cooking Fuel cubes/blocks simply need to be shaken vigorously to remove the excess water and are then ready for immediate use. To support this, we have soaked the fuel (in block and wrapped cube format) in sea water for a week and it lit immediately.

How long does the cooking fuel burn for?

This varies by format. The 26g Zip™ Cooking Fuel wrapped cubes burn for 18-20 minutes, the larger Zip™ Cooking Fuel block formats burn for c30 minutes.

When and where can I use the fuel?

For indoor use with adequate ventilation and outdoor cooking, in most climatic conditions, including desert, Arctic and mountains.

Is the fuel safe for children to use unsupervised?

We do not recommend any component of a cooking system, including the fuel, is left unsupervised in the presence of children or pets.

How much ventilation is required if I use it indoors?

None in large spaces. Zip™ Cooking Fuel burns cleanly.In small spaces such as tents or huts, always ensure adequate ventilation.

Can the fuel be used at high altitude?

Yes.

What do you use to light the cooking fuel?

A naked flame, such as a lighter or match, or an electronic lighter, such as a car cigarette lighter.

What happens if the fuel gets wet?

Zip™ Cooking Fuel cannot be damaged by water. Simply dry the fuel or shake vigorously to remove the water; the fuel can then be lit immediately.

Can the fuel be used in all weather conditions?

Yes.

Do I need any other equipment to use them?

Pots and pans for cooking, and the required utensils. A lighter or matches for lighting the fuel.

Is the cooking fuel toxic?

No. Zip™ Cooking Fuel is non-toxic and does not constitute a life hazard if it is accidentally consumed by humans or wildlife. 

Are there a list of ‘don’ts’ when using the stoves or cooking fuel?

Store all fuel out of the reach of children and pets. Don’t leave the stove unattended when in use. Keep on a stable surface from which it cannot fall. Please adhere to the warnings on all packaging.

Can any type of fuel be used with the Boilex™ Pyramid stoves?

No. The Boilex™ Pyramid stove is designed specifically to optimise the performance of Zip™ Cooking Fuel.

Why should I use the Boilex™ Pyramid stove?

It’s the perfect affordable pocket stove for individual/personal cooking. Lightweight, flat packed (simply folds out into the stove) and easy to carry, it is designed to work with Zip™ Cooking Fuel, which is based on a natural, sustainable biodiesel.

How heavy are the stoves?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stove weighs c50g.

How much water can I boil?

Designed for individual cooking, the strong durable structure of the Boilex™ Pyramid stove enables it to hold cups/small pots/mess tins. When used with a Boilex™ Pyramid stove, one cube of Zip™ Cooking Fuel will boil 500ml of water in c10 minutes.

Are the stoves heat resistant?

Yes. But the Boilex™ Pyramid stove should be allowed to cool for 3-4 minutes after use prior to handling.

How long after cooking can you pack them away?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stove should be allowed 3 to 4 minutes to cool after use prior to being stowed away.

How do you transport them?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stove is flat packed and easy to carry in a pocket or pouch.

Do they come in a case?

No. The Boilex™ Pyramid stove is delivered with the fuel cubes; a carry case should be purchased separately.

What size are they?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stove is 80mmx120mmx15mmwhen folded for storage and 80mmx120mmx4mm when folded flat, 80mmx120mmx80mm when assembled.

In colder conditions, or when no lid is used with the cup, this may increase by a minute or two and more fuel cubes may be needed.

What type of metal pot / pan can you use?

Any small metal pots and pans can be used.

Can I use the stove indoors?

’Yes, the Boilex™ Pyramid stove ensures that the Zip™ Cooking Fuel burns with a clean blue flame with no soot and is suitable for indoor cooking, provided there is adequate ventilation.

Can I use the stoves inside my tent?

Yes, provided there is adequate ventilation.

How long does the stove take to assemble?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stove is delivered flat packed and simply folds out into the stove. Just pull out the stove along the hinges or folds and fold around to make the Pyramid shape and hook one end into the other. Then place on a flat surface, ensuring any gaps to the ground are sealed with earth or sand to optimise performance. In all, stove assembly should take less than 10 seconds!

What is the ideal format of the Zip™ Cooking Fuel for this stove, and how long should it last?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stove will work best with the 26g Zip™ Cooking Fuel wrapped cubes, which should last about 18-20 minutes and be sufficient to boil 500ml of water in around 10 minutes.

Can you put the stoves on any surfaces?

How do I clean the stoves?

If still on exercise/in theatre/travelling, the stoves can simply be brushed on the grass to remove any loose combustion deposits. If conditions allow, the stoves can be cleaned more thoroughly with a damp cloth or with soapy water.

How do I dispose of the stoves?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stoves can be disposed of in any designated metal recycling station, but is safe to dispose of in general trash. If in a combat scenario - bury in a hole in the ground, cover with soil and it will safely biodegrade over time.

How many uses do the stoves have before I have to get a replacement?

The Boilex™ Pyramid stove is guaranteed for a minimum of 25 uses (but should last significantly longer if used correctly).

How long does it take to boil a cup of water?

The Boilex ™ Pyramid stove will boil a 500ml cup of water with one fuel cube in approximately 10 minutes (when the cup is used with a lid).

Are there any sharp edges that could puncture plastic or material?

No. All edges are rounded for safe handling but the user should always be careful no sharp edges have arisen from damage.

When can I use them?

For indoor (with adequate ventilation) and outdoor cooking, in most climatic conditions, including desert, arctic and mountains.

What is the maximum saucepan / pot weight?

The Boilex ™ Pyramid stove can hold up to 10kg in weight, so extremely strong. In use, it will perform best with small pots/pans/cups/mess tins of less than 2kg.

Are they safe for children to use unsupervised?

We do not recommend any children or pets are left unsupervised in the presence of a lit stove.

How much ventilation is required if I use it indoors?

None in large spaces. Zip™ Cooking Fuel burns extremely cleanly with the stove but there will be some combustion products so a degree of ventilation is always recommended.

Do they come in different colours?

No, the stove is the colour of its raw material, Aluminium.

Can they be used at high altitude?

Yes. The Boilex ™ Pyramid stoves are designed to work at high altitude with Zip™ Cooking Fuel, but more than one fuel cube may be required to bring the fuel to boil due to the lack of oxygen and the cold air temperature.

Will the stoves go rusty in damp conditions?

No. They are made of Aluminium and do not rust.

Will the stoves erode in artic temperatures?

No.

What is the size of the stove when fully assembled vs. stored?

No, the Boilex ™ All in One stove does not need separate pots and pans. It should also be noted that we only make stoves and Zip™ Cooking Fuel/ignition products. Cups and pots should be purchased separately.

Do I need any other equipment to use them?

You only need plates/bowls and the required utensils for eating, plus a lighter or matches for lighting the fuel.

Can any type of fuel be used with the Boilex™ Ultraclean stove?

The Boilex™Ultraclean includes inserts to enable it to work with biomass (such as wood, twigs, pellets, dung), liquids (such as alcohol and kerosene) and high energy density fuels (such as Zip™ Cooking Fuel and Hexamine).

Why should I use the Boilex™ stoves?

Because not only is the Boilex™ Ultraclean stove powerful, it is able to use different fuels, it is also one of the cleanest burning stoves on the planet!

How heavy are the stoves?

The Boilex™ Ultraclean weighs 3kg.

How much water can I boil?

The strong durable structure of the Boilex™ Ultraclean stoves enable them to hold pots of up to 30 litres but more normally the volume cooked would be 5 to 10 litres. So ideal for large groups.

How long does the Boilex™ Ultraclean stove last without being charged?

Between 20 and 60 hours, depending on the type of usage; full power uses the battery more quickly. LED lights on the front of the stove indicate the amount of battery power remaining.

Are the stoves heat resistant?

Yes. The Boilex™ Ultraclean stove can be easily picked up (by their sides) without risk of burning hands.

How long after cooking can you pack them away?

The Boilex™ Ultraclean stove can be stowed immediately after use.

How much fuel do you have to use?

It varies depending on the stove used, climatic conditions and altitude – and how much water needs to be boiled, or the quantity of food that needs to be cooked. To bring 5L of water to the boil, the user will need approximately 300g to 400gof biomass wood, or approximately 150gm high energy-density solid fuel e.g. Zip™ Military Fuel Blocks,or approximately 300g of Kerosene.

What type of metal pot / pan can you use?

Any metal pots and pans can be used.

How long does the Boilex™ Ultraclean stove take to charge?

About one hour from a standard mains charge and 10 hours from the solar panel. A full charge should be sufficient for a week’s use.

Can I use the stoves indoors?

Yes, the stoves ensure all approved fuels burn cleanly and is perfect for indoor cooking with adequate ventilation.

How long do they take to assemble?

The Boilex™ Ultraclean stove comes fully assembled, though there are different set up options associated with the switch between the chosen fuels. Switching can take up to 1 minute, so not complicated or time consuming.

Can you put the stoves on any surfaces?

Yes, the stoves have rubber corner pieces that ensure they can be placed on any surface without scratching. There will also be no heat damage to any surface since the heat travels upwards.

How do I clean the stoves?

The Boilex™ Ultraclean stove is waterproofed but we do not recommend they are submerged in water at any time. The outside of the stoves should be cleaned with a wet cloth, the inserts containing the fuel may be cleaned thoroughly with soapy water.

How do I dispose of the stove?

The body of the Boilex ™ Ultraclean stove is recyclable metal that can be disposed of in any designated metal recycling station, but is also safe to dispose of in general trash. The internal battery and electronics and fan will need removal and disposed of at an approved battery and electronics components recycling facility.

How many uses do the stoves have before I have to get a replacement?

The Boilex™Ultraclean is guaranteed for two years (terms apply).

On full power, the Boilex™ Ultraclean stove will boil a 500ml cup of water in approximately 4 minutes.

Are there any sharp edges that could puncture plastic or material?

No.

When can I use them?

For indoor and outdoor cooking, in most climatic conditions, including desert, Arctic and mountains. Since the stove contains electronic components, it should ideally not be used in the rain (though it is water resistant).

What is the maximum saucepan / pot weight?

30kg. Most large filled pots and pans weigh around 3-6kg.

Are they safe for children to use unsupervised?

We do not recommend any stove is left unsupervised in the presence of children or pets.

Can they be used at high altitude?

Yes. The Boilex™ Ultraclean stove is designed to work at high altitude with all approved fuels.

No. They are made of Stainless Steel and Aluminum and are coated with a waterproofing agent.
